I don’t understand why NBC took so long to preview the pilot of Guys With Kids, when it’s not even a mid-season show. What’s the point of a sneak preview when it’s only a week ahead of schedule? I probably shouldn’t complain, because I actually liked the show. My guess is that they spent the last few weeks working on a fun theme song. I definitely expected more from a show produced by Jimmy Fallon and an SNL writer (Charlie Grandy), but it’s not the worst pilot I’ve seen this season.
I like the unique premise, which differs from other bromance comedies in that it shows varying degrees of fatherhood instead of the typical exploration of different stages in romantic relationships. Instead of the single guy, engaged guy and married guy that shows like Rules of Engagement and Traffic Light feature, we have a stay-at-home dad, a married breadwinner, and a father recently divorced from his anal-retentive ex-wife. While Anthony Anderson is right at home in the same role he played in The Back-Up Plan and possibly My Baby’s Daddy (I didn’t see the latter), Friends With Benefits (the TV show) star Zach Cregger and Jesse Bradford, whose most recent notable work was in I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, are undoubtedly out of their elements.
I really want this show to make it, but they’re going to have to come up with something better than what we saw in the pilot. Or should I say what we saw in the teaser trailers? I felt like the funniest moments were the ones I saw in the promos, like Nick pretending to chase his daughter while grabbing a beer, and Gary’s son named Yoda. I’d like to see the other men featured more heavily in other episodes, because I think tonight’s story line was mostly about Chris. They wasted half of the episode worrying about a babysitter before deciding to have Nick babysit, and I find it hard to believe that Chris and Sheila would divorce so quickly after having their first child, and that Marny would go out in her street clothes with Emily when she’s wearing an evening gown. However, Nick’s assessment of Chris’ date outfit was hilarious (he looked like a Jewish Kirk Cameron), but I laughed when I saw how skinny his own jeans were. I also loved the Titanic theme that Nick used to decorate his apartment at the end of the show, though I think his wife would have shown much more appreciation.
What did you think of the preview? Are you going to watch this show?
